Lolita's Personality

If they aren't socialized properly macaws can become aggressive and even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly defined to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds that are fond of playing, climbing and play. They should spend at least 2 to 3-hours every day outside to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They also love going to the playgrounds and parks as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a fun pet they also make loving pets for children.
Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can be a nuisance to those who live close by. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who might be startled by their roar.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, the only way to identify sex is through DNA testing. Once the birds' sex is established the breeding process can begin.

Lolita's care
For years activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the sea.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to develop plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington where she could stay for the duration of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself and not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for 40 years. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. The first step in the training is System I. System II builds upon the repertoire introduced in System 1 with exercises on equipment. It also introduces teachers to exercises that use the Spine Corrector, Magic Circle, Foam Rollers and Bars. This module comes with a manual, and a DVD featuring Lolita teaching you the System.
After you have completed the teacher training program at Lolita, you'll be prepared to teach the Pilates Method anywhere in the world! This program will help you be a professional, safe and effectively with clients. You will gain a thorough understanding of the different exercises and their interactions.
